Pros and Cons: Framed vs. Frameless Glass Shower Doors and Enclosures

You’ve decided to get new glass shower doors or a glass shower enclosure, but you’re still not sure what style you want. Should you go with a frameless or framed glass shower enclosure? It’s okay, we are here for you. Below are a few pros and cons to keep in mind when making your decision.

Frameless Glass Shower Doors

Pro: A frameless shower door is great because it eliminates the need for any metal support by using heavier glass. The tempered glass is dense enough to support itself.

Con: While it’s great to not need any metal support, keep in mind that the glass tends to be heavier and installation is best left to the professionals. The last thing you want is to accidentally break that beautiful piece of glass.

Pro: Frameless glass shower doors have a streamlined, updated look. The lack of metal support lends its hand to a seamless, minimalistic design that opens up the space. If you get a clear glass shower door, you can also showcase your tile work.

Con: Although the frameless glass doors look more attractive, any gaps between the glass door, glass panels or walls may cause water to leak onto your floor. You can avoid this by making sure your shower head is aimed away from the door.

Pro: Frameless doors are easier to clean. They also decrease the chance of mold and mildew build up.

Frameless showers have a sleek look and are easier to clean. They can be customized to match the look of any bathroom. They add flexibility to any remodel and are custom made to fit your bathroom.

Framed Glass Shower Doors

Pro: A framed shower door relies on metal support and is typically made using thinner glass. They are also more cost effective because they don’t require heavier glass and are easier to install.

Con: Even though they are more cost effective, the metal support on a framed shower door may appear a little bulky and the glass a little flimsy compared to a frameless shower door.

A framed shower door may not be as visually appealing as a frameless door, but it will cost less, and you shouldn’t have any problems with leakage. These could also last just as long as a frameless glass shower door if you buy a quality shower door. However, they won’t be as easy to clean.
